#ZelleIntel The Importance of Impactful Onboarding

You just offered a job to a new employee, they signed the offer letter, and it’s their first day. Now what?

Onboarding is a process that all companies do, but how much thought have you put into your current process?

While there is a fundamental piece of onboarding with paperwork that must be completed, there is also a unique opportunity to have the undivided attention of the new team member. This is the chance every business receives to showcase their culture, standards, and teamwork to a new employee. Are you taking advantage of the full potential this process can provide?

What does successful onboarding look like?

A successful onboarding process goes beyond the paperwork. You’re setting the tone for new employees on their first day, week, and month. This is your first impression to showcase your business values, preparedness for them, and building excitement and buy-in for the employee. When creating your onboarding process, think beyond the first day. Ask yourself a few questions as you plan out the course of the program:

  • How can the business and the new employee have the greatest first impression the initial day, week, and month?
  • Who should meet this new employee?
  • What trainings should you set up for them?
  • Can you schedule out their first few weeks, so they know what to plan for each day?
  • How can you get the most facetime with other employees to build relationships and showcase culture?
  • What things can you as a business prepare for a new employee in onboarding that show the “why” behind their role, your business, and your values?

And we can never forget communication!

Communication is key in successful onboarding. Don’t communicate just once or twice with a new employee. Create multiple spaces in which hiring managers, coworkers, and leadership (if possible) have an opportunity to interact during the onboarding process. While new employees always have questions, as they should, we also want to eliminate questions regarding the basic things they should know. This basic information should always include what time they need to report, to whom they report to, and what items or documents they need to bring. Clear and consistent communication sets new employees up for a successful tenure. The outcome of a great onboarding process allows new employees to understand expectations clearly, identify their goals within their position, communicate effectively with team members, and create a smooth transition from recruiting to internal employment. No one likes to question what to expect when starting a new job, so let’s take away those questions and provide employees with clear understanding of how great their new employment opportunity with you is going to be!

What does successful onboarding look like for the future of your business?

Recruiting is hard. After starting a new job, your new team member will tell everyone they know about their first day, week, and month. If the experience is great, you’ll likely get referrals or inquiries about open positions. Bad news travels faster. Spend the time to create a great experience for your new teammate. Creating an impactful process today can pay off for your business and potential employees in the future.
